Aonach Mòr Avalanche: The Route
Experience pure, gravity-fuelled chaos in the Aonach Mòr Avalanche - where runners ride the gondola to high on Aonach Mòr and then launch into a 680-metre descent over just 3.7km. A fast 650m sprint down a wide grassy ski run sets the battle for position before you dive onto the legendary UCI downhill MTB course, charging through technical switchbacks, steep drops and forested singletrack all the way to the valley floor - this is downhill racing like no other.
Please note, all routes are provisional and subject to final consultations.
-
Your race experience starts with a 15-minute ride on the Nevis Range Gondola to reach the Snowgoose Cafe high on the flanks of Aonach Mòr. Runners will be corralled here and then walked as a group uphill to the start line. The start line will enable a mass start with 650m of wide open ‘piste’ before the start of the UCI downhill MTB track.
-
The route is approximately 4km with 0m of ascent!!
-
The Blue Doon and World Cup Downhill mountain biking routes are usually closed to pedestrian access because of the very real risk of a collision between a high-speed mountain biker and walker or runner. Please respect the warning signs and closure times of these trails, and do not go up or down them whilst the gondola is running, and mountain bikers are using these routes.
-
This route is suitable for trail runners of all abilities. The course will be fully way-marked, and no navigation experience is required for this race.

I declare that:
I have read and understood the information on the website about the nature of the course, which features rough and remote mountain trail running;
I can apply sound mountain judgement at all times even if it means compromising my overall race result;
I can diligently concentrate and follow waymarking;
I accept full responsibility for my own safety and any injury sustained during the event. These are not the responsibility of the event organiser, their agents or the landowners;
I know my limitations and I am experienced enough to make a reasoned decision whether or not to start the event and/or to retire from the event rather than jeopardise my own or other people’s safety;
I understand that there is a risk of serious injury or death whilst participating in mountain and trail running events such as this.

We know that kit and clothing requirements can be a bit confusing, and we hope that the downloadable checklist will help you select and pack the correct clothing and equipment. Our comprehensive clothing and equipment guidance has some great advice for more information.
